GAC says its attention is being drawn to stories published in the National Chronicle and the New Republic during the week falsely accusing the Auditor General John S. Morlu that he personally collected US$70,000.00 from the National Social Security and Welfare Corporation(NASSSCORP) during audit of NASSCORP July 1,2005 to June 30,2007 fiscal years ended. GAC press release indicates that the publications also misleadingly and dishonestly informed the public with the clear pre-conceived intent and purpose to malign, impugn, defame and ruin the integrity, respect and the professional work of the AG, staff and the GAC that AG Morlu violated Chapter 53, Section 53.10 of the Executive Law of 1972 by collected US$70,000.00 from NASSCORP for services the GAC performed. The media, GAC realizes, is an integral aspect and relevant partner in the fight against corruption. This is why the GAC would like to caution that media institutions, which are traditional allies in the fight against corruption, should not allow themselves to be used to undermine the professional work of the GAC. |

The General Auditing Commission (GAC) says more than sixty supreme auditors will leave for the 15 counties early next week on field verification for the second phase of the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) audits. GAC release indicates that the supreme auditors will be in the various counties for close to two weeks to verify and corroborate projects, financial transactions, documentations, payrolls and other relevant information from the outposts of the five ministries that are under the HIPC spotlight; namely, Health, Education, Lands Mines and Energy, Public Works and the Finance. GAC release says the last phase of the HIPC which covers the fiscal year ended 2007/2008 started last year with those listed ministries, except the Finance Ministry and had been progressing slowly due to the lack of maximum cooperation in the provision of documents and logistical support from the auditees and the Government of Liberia. |

An Analysis by the Communication Department of GAC The attention of the General Auditing Commission (GAC) has been drawn to a certain debate, which is an offshoot of a clear misunderstanding, over various categories of audits. Below are the following we have been reading in the media: · Political Audit · Fire Truck Audit · Discover and Repair Audit · Strategic Audit Before these new concepts of audits began to permeate the public space, GAC had neither known nor heard of these types of audits. Consequently, the General Auditing (GAC) been holding discussions with Liberians and Auditor Generals in Africa and in the Western world if they have had any information and knowledge on these perceptive paradigms about audit. Having listened to the ulterior objectives underpinning the coining of these phrases, GAC is making the following riposte, beginning with “Political Audit.” |

The General Auditing Commission (GAC) says it challenges the Friday, January 15, 2010 edition of The Analyst Newspaper to produce copy of a letter which it claimed the European Union (EU) wrote Auditor General Morlu this week allegedly expressing concern that the Commission was compromising its integrity and trust by playing up publicity controversies at the expense of the fight against corruption. The story is categorically untrue and it was intended to distract the Liberian people from the main issue of a forceful and unbending fight against corruption. GAC says it is regrettable that people will do disservice to the EU and the international partners that are tremendously assisting the GAC and the Government of Liberia in supporting the fight against corruption by spreading falsehood against those valuable Liberia partners in progress. |
